Hawaiian Cultural Village

Mike Kalikolani and Carol Makani Wong, award winning master artisans, along with Lokelani Reichert, Pelekikena of Lei Hulu of California, have been sharing their knowledge, skills and talents in the traditional arts and crafts of Hawai`i since 2000. Joining them this year in the Cultural Village will be members of Lei Hulu, artisans Michael Hiwilani Wong, Margaret and Gil Mohalalani Wong.

The Cultural Village will be conducting workshops throughout the weekend starting from noon until dusk on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday September 1st thru September 3rd from 10:00am (approximate time) following lei workshop on Saturday and lecture on Sunday until 6:00pm. There is a nominal fee for each workshop ($7.00 and up for materials and supplies). The following workshops will be available at the Hawaiian Cultural Village and will run continuously throughout each day:

  • Ipu Hokiokio (Gourd Nose Flute)
  • Oeoe (Gourd Bull Roarer)
  • Ipu Li`ili`i (Small ipu)
  • Paia`ie (Ball and Loop Game)
  • Na Pua Hulu (Feather Flowers)
  • Kahili Li`ili`i (Mini Feather Standard)
  • Lei La`i ame Loke La`i (Ti Leaf Lei and Rose)

Artisans participating in the Village will have on display Hawaiian traditional and contemporary art and crafts. Some of their items will also be for sale. The Village has participated at E Hula Mau since 2002; na Ho`olaule`a (CA and NV); Long Beach Sea Festival; City of Cerritos Family Lu`au; Southern California `Ukulele Festival and USC/Los Angeles.

About the artisans participating in the Village:

Mike and his son Hiwalani have held workshops in ipu and ipu heke for na hula halau, the International Gourd Festival and private groups. In 2005 Mike did an ipu hokiokio) workshop for the staff of Na Pua No`eau at the University of Hawai`i, Hilo. This past summer, Mike and Carol did a Na Mea Hawai`i for the students in the Summer Program for Na Pua No`eau , at the University of Hawai`i, Hilo. Carol has been commissioned by the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, E Hula Mau, Hula Oni E (along with Mike) to create their awards. The majority of her gourd fine art is done on a commission basis. Kumu Lokelani has shared her talents with the Kupuna Program, Dept. of Education, Hawaiian Studies, Honolulu, HI; Civic Clubs in San Diego, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and at Iosepa, Utah. Margaret and Gil Wong have been working with the community groups for the past several years in ti leaf making and ipu making.
